Penny Wilmot leads a simple life. Together with her widowed father and best friend Boone they run a small U-Pick farm. She never asked for much, and certainly wasn’t looking for him…

Jackson Hawkes lives his life at one steady speed: fast. On a mission to find his father, he takes a road trip and ends up finding himself with a new band, a new job and a new dream.

The two meet by accident and begin a romantic adventure in the summer heat of Alabama. But what happens when the pair find out that they have the one thing in common that took their whole worlds away from them?

Death. It takes things away, but can it bring the two together?

Join Penny and her sons of Alabama in a turbulent journey of love and loss..

4494d-reviewThanks to the author and SMI Promotions, I was allowed to read an ARC of this book for an honest review.  This is a debut novel so I was very interested to see what it was like.  I will admit that when I first started the book, I was uncertain my thoughts on it.  The progression seemed a little slow so I was thinking that maybe it might not be something I was interested in.  I stuck with it and within a few chapters, I wanted to keep reading to see where it lead.

This is a sweet story about two young people who have faced tragedy in their pasts.  They are so cute together and it is fun to read how they fall in love with each other.  Even with the love story, though, there is much more to this book.  It deals with the emotions faced with tragic loss and how each person handles that loss.  Penny has to face her demons to be with Jackson.  As they are working so hard to move forward, they are hit with a totally unexpected surprise.  Because I don’t want to include spoilers, let me just say that the book has a twist that you would never expect.  This twist has an impact on the relationship of Penny and Jackson.  The author did a great job of including a plot twist that really grabbed you emotionally.  Again, no spoilers, but I will say that this is not a cliff-hanger book for those that don’t like those.  You can finish this book and be happy.

E.A. Whitehead came through with a sweetly written debut novel.  I give this book four-stars.  I am looking forward to seeing what this writer has in her future.

E.A. Whitehead is the author of Alabama Sons, book one of The Sons Trilogy. She spends an unhealthy amount of time ‘pinning’ things and getting lost in a fantasy world where everything is DIY and she owns a 12-room house to decorate. She obsesses over hockey (go Bruins!), all things Harry Potter, and her cats Little Bear and Baby Girl. She also believes that Wanderlust will cure your soul, live your dreams passionately!
