The Temptation of Lila and Ethan–A Review

cover36528-mediumThanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read The Temptation of Lila and Ethan by Jessica Sorensen.  I will admit that I have not read the Ella and Micha Series so I was a little concerned when I started this book that I may be behind on the story.  Never fear, you can read this book without reading the others and do just fine.

This book surprised me to some extent.  Having never read Ms. Sorensen’s work, I really didn’t know what to expect.  This story had much more depth to it than any regular love story.  This was a story about two very damaged young people who were trying to find their way in the world.  Both had taken drastic means to live day to day and survive in their own minds.  Lila’s parents had clearly broken her as a child and as a young woman, she was left to try to handle her life in the manner her mother had taught her…through medication.  Ethan’s father had made him afraid that he would turn into a raging monster if he ever fell in love and stayed in a committed relationship.  In addition, Ethan’s only attempt at something resembling a relationship had gone tragically wrong.

These two characters spend the book trying to grow into the people they want to be while trying to fight their common attraction to each other.  As time passes, they realize that there is no fighting the inevitable.  Each helps the other get past their past and begin to build on a future that is drug free and happy.  It is such an interesting journey, painful, but interesting.  Ms. Sorensen does an excellent job of portraying the damage in both characters and also the improvement each makes in their lives.  It is a heart wrenching, gripping story that makes you want to keep reading in hopes that the next pages brings them a step closer to a normal life.  Definitely should be on your to be read list.  Five star book!
